"Nuance is the highest level of technique" - Wynton Marsalis. He oughta know! I'm a professional photographer, educator, and writer. I try to pass this on to my students - and myself! - because for all the reasons mentioned in the piece, it's one of the ways people are simply able to produce good work.

Rob, I loved this post. Thank you. I'm sharing a post I also did about the concept of nuance last November that you might be interested in. It is interesting to me to see that others are thinking about the same concept. Here is the link to "Nuance": https://themuseumofideas.substack.com/p/nuance Warmly, -- Shannon

Re: nuance—it’s so important for me to remember that individual people contain contradictions and respect that. I so want to make everything simple!

Also I love the best part of the day journal idea. Am tempted to adopt although my daily journal entries are already too long.

Yes! I love this post. In the time where everyone, it seemed, had a "In this house we believe..." sign that fell down pretty unimaginative lines on one side or the other, I vowed to make a yard sign that said "I believe in nuance." I never did, but nuanced made it into my Substack byline :)

I like that yard sign idea ;)

Fascinating - I’m a photographer & it would be fun to take two photos of the same person - basically same pose, etc but with a subtle nuance added to the second photo…could the second nuanced photo change everything?

This article particularly is why art is important. We can disagree but be open to insights about each other. We can learn to communicate more precisely, to engage each other with more invitation to understanding. Thank you.

Pro-choice is not anti-life. Pro-life is not pro-woman. I feel as if there is a nuance here that does not allow those of us who are pro-choice to simultaneously recognize that just because we support a woman’s choice, we are not pro-life in its many iterations. The two movements named themselves (or each other) to the point of exclusion but it’s more of an overlapping and more complex/subtle decision best not made by male politicians with different plumbing variables.

Xenophobia is not patriotism. Reading is not learning. Imagining is not planning. Social media is not social. Anti-Hamas is not pro-Palestine. Pro-Palestine is not pro-Hamas. Political is not controversial. Illegal is not immoral. Religion is not (always) theistic (unitarianism).
