Thank you for articulating this idea of periphery. I tend to have a “low level of delight” (not my phrase, but I like it!), and I think it’s in part because I get as—or more—transfixed with the periphery as with whatever the main “goal” is supposed to be—so there’s always something interesting going on.

Also, huge thanks for using my missing word!!! I look forward to reading more.

Great post once again, Rob. The "spotlight" concept makes me think of one of my favorite quotes from the photographer Uta Barth. She says, "Painting is an additive practice. You start out with a white canvas and make your marks. Photography is subtractive, you have the whole world and you edit and select a small rectangle or square of it." Love it!

.. outstanding post ! i has my own ways re streetshootin .. as its daily for moi - ! & like iconic - pattern & graphic finds me attracted - and sometimes ‘the shot.. is but a ‘glancing thang.. ‘found shot.. or shot that reached out for you like peripheral vision does .. where you stop & take two steps backwards to take a better note of that glancing moment.. luv those ! 🦎🏴‍☠️🎬

What is better than asking a female deity to bless your upcoming basketball game? Isn’t all faith just extra focused attention? Over the next month or so all major backroads will be clogged with those of us seeking seasonal color—the yellows, golds, oranges and reds that blaze like fire during most autumns. But it’s the weather that brings us those colors—a cold snap or a short frost followed by (my favorite season of all) Indian summer afternoons. So here is my fervent prayer: Bless us with the blazing and amazing colors we seek this fall before we tuck ourselves in for the long winter.

Love the periphery idea. I've taken walks where I focus on sounds, with the goal of hearing 6 things I might not have noticed and then - this is sometimes a challenge - remembering what the six things are so I can text them to a friend when I get home.
