This evening I begin co-leading a group of kids in exploring local parks and forest preserves using our senses. It has been very unusual to plan because, we want the kids to guide the discoveries and discussions and yet, we want to be prepared with information and activities. I don't know ow what will happen, but it will be fun to find out.

I love this idea! We recently moved to a new area and honestly just walking around our local suburban streets has felt like such an adventure. Having lived in South London for the first 32 years of my life it's been weird being somewhere new and not knowing everything like the back of my hand, but fun to discover new things (even if it's just a front door I like, a shortcut or a new takeaway restaurant!).

When I was at uni one of my projects was to make a 'New Home Task Book' for people that encouraged them to do things like go and look for a cool tree within walking distance from their house.... I need to dig it out and do it myself!

This whole premise is great but I especially loved tip number three: think about some places you don’t want to go, like a restaurant that looks lame.

We try so hard to maximize our enjoyment of our free time, the idea of instead deliberately choosing something that does not appeal sounds so relaxing!

I'm a relatively new subscriber but what a delight this post is! I've copied down your adventure suggestions and I'm going to see how many I can do over the next week.

Although, I know this edition is all about home, I also took away from this a new longing to leave the city and go live by the sea. Rain is definitely more bearable when it feels biblical and god like!

Completely concur with this article. In the UK I suspect the "need to get away" has cultural origins in the industrial times. People living in population dense polluted environments with long working hours probably did need to "get away". A high percentage of the UK population live within 50 miles of a city all of which have many hundreds of years of history and things to explore. Public museums are free entry to everyone and there are some outstanding places, for example, National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, Natural History, Science and Victoria and Albert in London.

Walk a dozen blocks on one side of the street and walk back on the other side. Enjoy the different perspective. Choose a destination that can be accessed by various routes - travel by one route and return by another. Savour the change of perspective. We are about to circumnavigate our country by ship for the eighth time but the first in a clockwise direction - looking forward to the change.

Loved every bit of this! Getting out in the elements can surely coax even the most timid adventure out of hiding.

Visiting old neighborhoods is a great way to learn more about your family or your loved ones. I always loved when my parents drove me through their old stomping grounds. The stories would fly!

Very interesting indeed, great advises. The place is not really important, but how you live that moment or experience, how you connect ( or not) and the energy, concentration and intention you put on any action. Be in the present, mindfulness.

The obvious is sometimes right under our nose. As I say, it's not always about what you see but what you might find.... no matter whether you have been there before. It will never be the same! Good advice Rob

"you don’t have to travel the world to feel alive and engaged. You can do it anywhere" - as I've gotten older (and having done a fair bit of travelling in the past), this is now one of the principles I live by. I live on the beautiful Isle of Wight in England and there really is enough here to keep me in mini adventures for years! Another great read, thanks!

My way of seeing places from a fresh perspective is to take another form of transportation to move around, let's say the bus or my bike if it's a place I mostly go to by car. It changes my perception of the place radically and I notice new things About facing adverse weather, I've got a dog that needs to be walked no matter what and I do get plenty of elemental moments. And I'm so grateful for these moments because there's beauty there too that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Love Lloyd Kahn! He’s published some beautiful books over the years on alternative living structures thru his Shelter Publications. Judging by his social media posts he’s still very engaged and living a fantastic life.

About foreign travel, I’ve really come to appreciate my own little neck of the woods the PNW. My lifetime here will only be skimming the surface of this beautiful outdoor paradise.
